  4. Dezeen Designed in Hackney

Lovely feature by Dezeen on our Lumiphone workshop at Hacked Milan last week as part of their designed in Hackney feature. Designed in Hackney is a Dezeen initiative to showcase world-class architecture and design created in the borough, which is one of the five host boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic Games as well as being home to Dezeen’s offices. They’ll publish buildings, interiors and objects that have been designed in Hackney each day until the games this summer.

  5. Salone de Mobile: Hacked Milan at La Rinacente

Two weeks ago we headed over to Milan for design week to be part of a great event Hacked Milan, curated by Beatrice Galilee. Set in la Rinascente right next to the Duomo cathedral, we took over the whole of the hacked space on Wednesday 18th April and held 4 workshops alternating between Lumiphone and Thirsty Plant, with Light painting demos in between. It was a great success and every workshop was full, with many crowds gathering to watch and a great group Lumiphone performance to end the day.

We have hundreds of photos from the day so take a look at our flickr set.

  6. W+K Founders Day: Centre 2042

On Sunday 1st April we were invited to run our Lumiphone workshop for 100 people as part of the Weiden and Kennedy founders day at an event curated by Beatrice Galilee, it was their 30th anniversary so the day had that extra ordinary twist..

The theme of the day was Centre 2042 – we had all been taken 30 years into the future. Matt Jones from BERG kicked off the day by blasting us into the future, then everyone was treated to 3 different workshops experiences ours being one of them. The other on show were  We Colonised the Moon allowed everyone to smell the moon before they tasted the future with food artist Caroline Hobkinson and explored new territories with the Unknown Fields Division. Although unfortunately we didn’t get to experience any of the other workshops. For the final stop of the day, Sam Bompas from Bompas & Parr came in with the Experimental Cocktail Company and blew everyones brains out by drinking futuristic cocktails, which we happily got to enjoy.

  7. Google Campus houses Thirsty Plant detectors

Our friends at Wayward Plants designed and built the Living Technology Garden in the new Google Campus London, a unique co-working space in the heart of East London’s Tech City which supports tech start-ups.

A handmade moss wall wraps the courtyard, utilising an innovative rainwater collection system. The gaps in the walls are tagged with Moss Graffiti, a guerrilla gardening tactic. Woodland plantings of ferns and hellebores fill the concrete planters in this shady space. They asked us to contribute by placing our Thirsty Plant detectors around the garden, so of course we obliged, to create a Living Technology Garden that tells you when its Thirsty.

The Living Technology Garden will facilitate ongoing collaborations with start-ups that merge plants and technology.

  9. Open IDEO launches StartUpPlan

Our friends at Open Ideo have just launched a great new virtual platform for startups – Check it out below:

StartUpPlan – The Startup Planner Platform

A web platform to help startups plan their build, marketing needs and attract talent/freelancers to help with various aspects.

This is a collaborative tool and community where someone thinking of starting up a commercial or social enterprise is taken through a number of steps to define their goals and their needs.

They would then get a project homepage with plan laid out. They can add any request for resources, funding and help.
The community then can browse the projects and offer their services in return for equity or voluntarily.
All aspects of the Startup’s progress is tracked on the platform and allows team members to collaborate remotely on code, design, strategy.
For example, for a social startup, someone could come up with a great idea and be looking for coders and designers to join that projects. As they attract community talent, these people can signup to cheer the project on or become fullly-fledged team members, uploading their work and sharing with eachother. Within the space of a few days, new startups could be designed and built.

Please visit the website for more details.

  10. sugru in primary colours!

Exciting news! As of today, our friends at Sugru have launched  Primary Colours. Over the last year or so they have had hundreds of emails asking for different colours, and the ability to mix a wider range of colours. So… they’ve been beavering away for ages to make it work. And now were happy to say they’ve cracked it!!

Finally for those of you who prefer a subtler more invisible hack, you’ll now be able to match almost any colour. And for all you colour lovers – the mixing possibilities have just exploded!

    So happy hacking everyone!
We hope you love them as much as we do!
